Steps to Accessorize Correctly

Often people find it difficult to mix and match proper accessories to an outfit. Accessories can either make or break an outfit and hence it is vital that you pick the right one. There are some clear cut do’s and don’ts in the fashion world when it comes to accessories. So here are some of the basics you need to learn so that the next time you pick out a scarf or necklace you’ll know exactly what you want.

  1. Wear one flashy piece at a time

If you wear too many accessories at the same time, you are going to look like a mess. The rule here is to choose one statement piece for each outfit so that all attention is focused on it. For example, if you have a gorgeous diamond necklace, you can wear a plain coloured dress with it so that all gazes will shift to your neck. If you are planning on wearing more than one, make sure they match each other and consider proportion. For example, wearing two big accessories such a designer jacket and handbag will not be a good combination since both are prominent. Instead, choose one small and one big; a handbag and diamond earrings.

  1. Don’t match too much

It will become a nightmare if you dress up completely in one colour; a blue dress with blue shoes, handbag, jewellery, hat etc. So, play with colours wisely. You can use a colour wheel to identify what colours go good together. Don’t go for two bright colours; rather go for one bight and one pale. Also, try to accentuate a colour that is not the colour of the outfit. For example, if you have a white dress with a tiny pink flower on the side, do not wear white accessories, rather wear pink. This will add colour to your overall outfit and limit the excess white.

  1. Balance the size of the pieces

If you opt to wear large long earrings then you cannot wear a heavy necklace too. This will make your face and neck too flashy. Rather, avoid the necklace and pair up with simple shoes and clutch. Also, your accessories should not be too big so that special features of your outfit are covered. For example, if you have a beautifully embroidered collar, you wouldn’t want to wear a huge scarf around and your neck and cover it up.

  1. Choose items that enhance your features

You need to dress to compliment nature’s gifts or hide flaws. For example, if you are petite, wear tight jeans with high heel shoes to make your legs look longer. If you have great collarbones, a simple but pretty necklace and draw attention to it. a matching scarf can accentuate your eyes.
